We’re continuing our five part mini series with Joshua’s Encouragement – Part II – Confirmed By God. If you missed part one, catch up here.
2. God’s word of encouragement came directly to Israel’s new leader as a confirmation from God Himself.
Moses was dead.
For thirty days the whole company of Israel had mourned.
The congregation of Israel had made a promise before Moses and God to follow Joshua, their new leader, as they had Moses. This was yet to be proven.
The land promised to them by God lay before them – unconquered.
It was here that the Lord spoke directly to Joshua -
“Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan…as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
“Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land…only be thou strong and very courageous…
“Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”
This word thrust Joshua and the host of Israel into a miraculous crossing of the swelled Jordan river.
This word compelled Joshua, with a God-given strategy, to lead the armies of God into victory over the walled city of Jericho.
Was God’s encouragement finally taking root in the new leader’s heart?
- This story is found in Deuteronomy 34 & Joshua 1.
All Scripture quotations are taken from the KJV.
Think about it:
Has some dark cloud of unbelief hidden God’s promises from your view? Has some grief cast a shadow over your joy? Do your daily tasks overwhelm you?
Maybe you’ve hoped someone would notice by now, and strengthen your feeble hands. People may let us down, but our Lord never will.
Be strong, Friend! Fight unbelief, grief, fear, and discouragement with the Word of God.
God’s Word is fresher and more alive than any human condolences.
- Ask God to direct you to a Scripture that fits your need.
- Write it down and keep it easily accessible.
- Memorize and meditate on it.
- Allow it to challenge and mold your mindset.
Take heart. The Lord has a purpose and a plan. He knows where you are and where He’s taking you.
Have I not commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid neither be thou dismayed: for the Lord thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.
